Five Minute Friday-“Neighbor”

You know, I have seen so much ugliness over the last few years. Something relating to social media heightened the need to feel outrage at something, anything. We have joined along with heated debates, fueling the fire of hate with sarcastic responses and less than godly words. As platforms such as Facebook or Twitter became more popular, so did the confidence hidden behind a screen. In a moment of rage, we ferociously take aim and fire with ticks of our fingertips. What we would never do face to face, we now feel strong enough to do while hidden comfortably in our homes.

I declare shame on us.

Our neighbors are not only the people living to your immediate right or left. They are not limited to the people you pass on the trail down the street. Our neighbors are every breathing life on this planet. The people you may never meet, but may interact with on a screen. Our neighbor is the Iraqi across the ocean, the North Korean, the Saudi Arabian, the man sleeping under the bridge, and folks, your neighbor is the President of the United States. Therefore, if you have spoken one ill word against him in any capacity, you have not lived according to the will of Jesus Christ.

Mark 12:30-31-
..you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ The second is this, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”

There are no excuses or justifications for the way people have treated one another. We may not attack another based on differing opinions, no matter how correct you think you are. Be slow to speak, so that what flows from your mouth is received in love and with clarity.

Let the example of neighborly love we have witnessed in Texas this week take hold. Let our hearts be poised to stand firm on the truth of Jesus Christ. May we turn away from these dark worldly ways and turn towards the world with His Light shining bright.
God Bless.

  1. So true- with social media etc we can have neighbours across the world and we do need to show them the same love and kindness as those we see face to face. It is encouraging how when there is a situation like there has been in Texas, people rise to the challenge to be good neighbours, but it is also something we need to try to do all the time.
