If you could un-invent something, what would it be?
Some remarkable men and women invented wonderful things that contribute to society today. I often consider what is beneficial, essential, or potentially harmful to our planet’s welfare.
Be as unpopular as it may be, I say the invention of oil refinement.
We are a dark world when it comes to this vast resource. The money and greed behind oil have plagued the globe for a long time. While we enjoy modern living thanks in part to oil, I believe simpler would be better. Our weaknesses as a 21st-century society are embarrassing compared to the strength of our ancestors.
Growing up, we had a sweet cabin in the mountains near Golden, Colorado. No plumbing, no water. The outhouse was cold. Hauling gallons of water from the fresh spring was grueling for a ten year old girl. But the beauty of my surroundings, the smell of nature, and the sound of peace never leave me.
I’m as guilty as anyone with all our modern conveniences. I would give them all up if it meant a better world. It wouldn’t be easy, but I know it can be done.
