What was your favorite subject in school?
Time flies by, and with it goes life. School is a faded and very distant memory. However, one subject that was my favorite was English class. I fell in love with written language. In words on a page, I came alive.
My silence rang out through essays, poetry, reports, and creative writing. Free to express the secrets of my heart, I expelled the dormant truths in mysterious rhythms that sang on every page. What left others in wonder built my confidence. Abuse could not stop me, and that was freedom. Once the flow of expression began, it never shut off.
Every subject invited my young mind to seek. Unlike other kids who despised the forced classes, I relished every moment in science or social studies. I tolerated math as a challenge. I can confirm it remains in the same category tonight. I just finished helping my grandson with seventh-grade math. Either memory fails me, or those teachers passed me for sheer effort alone—these poor kids of mine. Nana needs help!
Learning was a beautiful gift. I loved it then, and I love it now. After a half-century of life, I’m hungry for more. Perhaps the world should slow down and concede they’ll never know everything. You will spend a lifetime in the invisible halls of education.
Every subject becomes a favorite as you watch time tick away. Learn as much as you can as long as you can. Then teach someone else, especially a child. Watch the mental gears spin and turn and work together. It will bring joy, even when it is math.
