Five Minute Friday-Work: A teen mom’s story

I have been a mother since my mid-teens. Which means I have worked since I can remember. This week I was appalled to hear a rant ‘for’ abortion, assuming abortion is the better choice, because young moms are unable to care for them, will fail and be forced to live on welfare their entire lives.

I was outraged. I did not appreciate the slap in the face. I will cut some slack to those who may believe this innocently. However, to use this argument as a right to abortion is not ok.

Here is some facts about my life.

With other teen mothers, I graduated a semester early, with an abundance of credits. Most went on to enroll in college the following semester. After reconnecting on Facebook, I learned many are doing well. Did they receive temporary assistance? Probably. However, temporary is the key word. Did they receive grants and scholarships? Probably. I did. So did many of my other friends who were not parents.

I worked hard. I have carried this strong work ethic with me my entire life. I put the work in that was necessary to heal from a violent and turbulent childhood. These issues probably led me down the road I took. As always I take responsibility for my actions, I only share this for some insight.

I put the effort and work into my life to raise a son (now 27) who just bought his first home with his beautiful wife. I put the work in to raise my son in love, and he knows God. He is a member of our worship team. He is a wonderful father. He is a dedicated and hard-working employee.

While others were out partying, I was at work- raising my son.

So do not belittle people, and have so little faith in them. To suggest any woman, or man for that matter, regardless of demographics or race, is not capable of succeeding in this life is degrading. To use their unfortunate life circumstances, or their less than stellar choices as an argument to kill life, is disgusting. To assume a young mother, or father, is not capable of doing the work necessary to live well is laughable, naive, and dare I say- ignorant?

And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. ~Romans 8:28

God can work through our lives to accomplish great good. I did not know God then as I do now. I had to work to find my way to Him. When I did, he loved me just the same as he loves you.

He never doubted me.

Be that kind of love.

      1. Many thanks, Lisa. It’s Sylvia, on of my service dogs – and the ‘face’ of my blog.

She has an upset stomach, and truly appreciates they prayers. Right now she is sleeping in the bathtub (her favourite spot, for whatever reason).

  1. I love your determination and that you’re seeing the results of your hard work as well as God working in you. It’s horrible when people make blanket judgements, and really unfair when the reality’s often quite different and every story is unique.
